Letter from India – Pre Philatelic

1840, the ‘Black Penny on Indian Letter Quartet’: four letters from India to Great Britain all re-directed within Great Britain by using a Black Penny.1) Exchange form and letter from Calcutta (30. Apr.) to London (12. Nov.), re-directed within London by using 1d black tied with black Maltese cross, carried by the 300 ton barque ”Louisa Munro”, with framed ‘INDIA LETTER/DEAL’ h/s and red arrival ds’s on back.2) Main part of folded letter from Mymunsing (2. July) to England and re-directed to Bracknell (Berkshire) with 1d black (Plate 5) tied with red Maltese cross. Framed ”MYMUNSING 2 July 1840 Paid 1 Rupee” desatch and Calcutta transit ds’s as well as arrival ds’s on back.3) Entire from Mynpoore (8. July) to London (9. Sept.), re-directed to Wales by using 1d black (Plate 4) tied with red Maltese cross. With ‘Mynpoore Paid’ despatch and arrival ds’s on back, red framed ”POSTAGE NOT PAID/TO LONDON” along with tax marks on front.4) Entire from Simla (9. Dec.) to London (8. Feb. 1841), re-directed to JERSEY and franked with 1d black tied with red Maltese cross. Endorsed ‘Per Overland Mail – Paid to Bombay’.A phantastic quartet representing the major part of the known Indian letters franked with Penny Black. (T)

Postal stationery cover 1/2 A. blue, issue 1857, with duplex KASHMIR 15 / April / 1878, to Bombay, franked on reverse with special edition for Dschammu and Kashmir: 1877 / 78, 0, 5A.
