Military Mail. The strategic importance of Bermuda had been apparent from the 18th. Century. In 1795, after the Revolutionary War, the British restored bases its bases on the American continent though it wasn’t until the War of 1812 that there was a significant increase in the British naval presence on Bermuda. She became the winter home of the Atlantic fleet and the principal naval port between Halifax and the B.W.I. Halifax was the fleet’s summer home. Concessionary Rates. The routing of military mail is not as easily explained as civilian mail. Mail was sent by the most expeditious method, usually by non-military ships. Military vessels carried civilian mail, their sendings were not advertised so their use was very much on an ad hoc basis. Soldiers and Sailors rates. A special rate of 1d. for Soldiers and Sailors was in effect from 1795. The letters needed to be countersigned by the Commanding Officer and had to include the senders and regiments name. Soldiers. 1875 (31 May) envelope “From No. 1312 Sergt. Henry Pidder 97th. Regt.” to London, per Cunard Alpha to Halifax and thence Allan Line Nestorian to Queenstown, bearing 1875 1d. on 3d. yellow-buff (imperforate at right) cancelled “B/1” and with “st georges/bermuda” oval datestamp at left partially covered by light London Paid datestamp, twice redirected and with Crowned “r” handstamp at lower right corner, no forwarding charges being made on military mail. This line offered direct service between Bermuda and return, whereas Cunard did not, In 1869 after the Inman Line lost the contract, Cunard again carried transatlantic mail. 1873 (21 June) triple rate envelope (220x92mm.) ex the Gray correspondence from Hamilton “Via New York” to London, per crop vessel Hatteras to New York and thence Cunard Calabria to London, rated “1/3” in red crayon and bearing 1865 6d. dull purple, 1/- green (imperforate at left) and 1873 3d. yellow-buff lightly cancelled “2” (K1), Hamilton H1 datestamp at left and London Paid datestamp (7.7) below the adhesives; envelope with vertical crease at left and a couple of light tones, otherwise fine. An early usage of the recently introduced 3d. value, and the sole recorded example of this attractive three-colour franking. Photo

These changes made the Cunard Bermuda-Halifax connection more important. The following section illustrates the inter-relationships between Cunard, RMSP and other lines. Cunard and The Inman Line, 1 January 1868-June 1871. After 1 January 1868, Cunard lost the contract for the transatlantic route to the British Steamship Company. The Inman Line continued her service to Halifax where she connected with that line, and later with other lines. 1869 (9 Apr.) envelope from St. George’s to Bordeaux, per Cunard Alpha to Halifax and thence per Inman Etna to Queenstown, rated “½” in red crayon and bearing 2d. dull blue block of four (imperforate at top, the largest multiple recorded on cover) and a single, and 6d. dull purple all cancelled “B/1” (K2) and with St. George’s datestamp (P5) at left, also showing Paid Liverpool Br. Packet datestamp (3.5), oval-framed “pd” and Calais entry datestamp (2.5) additionally tying the 2d. block, Paris-Bordeaux T.P.O. and Bordeaux arrival datestamps on reverse; filing crease crosses the 2d. single, otherwise fine and a very rare franking. Moncrieff Esq., 3 Waterlow Place, Pall Mall, London SW”, per Quebec Canima to New York and per Cunard Abyssinia to Queenstown, bearing “One/Penny.” on 2d. dull blue, “One/Penny.” on 3d. yellow-buff (4 including a pair – straight-edge at right), “One/Penny.” on 1/- green and in combination with 1865 1d. rose-red, all lightly cancelled “3” (K1), showing “bermuda/i/paid” P5 datestamp at lower left corner with portions of the date altered in manuscript and, on reverse, London arrival datestamp for 21 June; the stamps and cover with a few light age marks, nevertheless a remarkable and colourful franking, and the only cover known bearing all three values of the 1875 One Penny Provisional issue. Allen, tied with magenta ribbon and with red wax seals with initials “b.c”, per Quebec Canima to New York and showing “Due” handstamp completed for “35c” (7 x 5c. per ½oz. rate) and with two “n. york/steamship” datestamps at foot.
