Cuba. Incoming Mail. 1809, April 16. Entire letter from Barcelona addressed to the Captain of the “La Modestia” frigate stationed at Havana, entering the military mail during the Independence War of Spain against France during the Napoleonic period, with oval “Exercito Cataluña” handstamp. Ink erosions where tape stains are located. Of great significance, this being the only example recorded of Spanish military franchise in transatlantic mail. Ex Kouri.
